Alabama Completes its Second Consecutive Perfect Regular Season

Alabama was able to escape the iron trap Friday and cap off its regular season undefeated for the second year in a row. However, the Tide’s perfect season was in jeopardy it seemed the whole game until McElroy capped off the game winning drive late in the fourth quarter with a touchdown pass to Roy Upchurch. Talk about the perfect time to have your only receiving touchdown than to do it to win the game against your rival.

Auburn opened the game with gimmick play after gimmick play, disrupting the Tide defense and opening up to a 14 to 0 lead. However, once the game slowed down the Tide took over answering back with 14 unanswered points and tying the game going into the half. Again, it wasn’t until the last possession did it seem Alabama had the upper hand.

Auburn out rushed the Tide, however it was Greg McElroy and his 218 yards and 2 touchdowns that were the difference. He completed 21 of his 31 passes and had no interceptions on the day. The game leading rusher was surprisingly a wide receiver who sprinted for 67 yards on a reverse for the Tigers in the first quarter.

As for the competition for the best running back in the state. Auburn’s Ben Tate and Bama’s Mark Ingram had quiet games, which opened the door for the debate to continue.

While Bama was taken by surprise in the first quarter, once the defense settled in and the offense started to warm up, the Tide maintained it state superiority and now has the state bragging rights for another year.
